12. Do you take on listed buildings?

If you have a Grade 1 listed building, or an ancient or historic building then we recommend you go to a specialist company that deal with such buildings. We are however in various cases able to take on projects involving exterior refurbishment of Grade 2 listed buildings. However these will be subject to planning permission.

Aqua Protection use breathable, often lime based, renders to repair Grade 2 listed buildings. We try to respect the original character of the building by using a blend of the old and new when refurbishing the building.

Aqua Protection put safety at the top of their priority list and will not work in dangerous conditions such as structurally unsound buildings, properties at risk of flooding, properties in close proximity to civil unrest, or risk of war or terror. 25. So how long does it take from start to finish to apply a new wall coating treatment to my house?

Unfortunately this is very difficult to say as every roof is different and we cannot account for disrupting weather conditions. We will attempt to give you an idea as to how long it would take but please be aware that this may change due to various unforeseen circumstances. We wouldn’t be doing our job properly if our priority was time and not quality of work. The size of your roof and the amount of repair can make a big difference to the amount of time it takes to do the job. Small roofs without much repair work may only take a day to complete whereas larger roofs may take longer perhaps up to a week depending on the weather conditions.

The Guarantee is associated to your house so if you move home then the guarantee needs to be transferred to the new owners. All you need to do is inform us in writing as soon as possible so that we can make the administrative amendments.

31. How will the wall coating lower my heating bills?

Basically because it is a lot thicker than normal paint, 20 times thicker in fact! Added benefits are the specialist resins and fillers which work to reduce wind chill thereby increasing the heat to your roof, and eliminating damp. You won’t need to turn your thermostat up so high and so your heating bills will cost you less. It’s a win win situation!

If you suspect you may have a problem with damp then be sure to opt in for a free damp survey. Don’t delay and get it investigated sooner rather than later. It is a well known truth that people are more susceptible to health problems when they have problems with damp in their home. 32. But if this were true then traditional contractors like painters and decorators, and even builders, would be out of work?!

No not so at all. Painters and decorators still work to serve a purpose. Some people are not looking for a product that will stand the test of time, or remove damp, but just want a temporary make-over. There are many instances with domestic housing that may involve a painter or decorator rather than a specialist wall coatings company. We are not one and the same thing and so there is certainly enough room in the world for both of us to work in!

A painter or decorator is the ideal choice if you are looking for a cheap option and you don’t have any damage to your walls including damp. If you are not interested in saving money on your heating bills, or not considering the property on a long-term basis then it may be more cost effective for you to get a painter or decorator to do the job. However many people now seem to want more for their money. They want assurances that the work they have done now will last for many years. That’s where we come in.

There are huge differences between an exterior wall professional like us, and a painter and decorator. 33. Do I need to have my house covered in scaffolding?

In many circumstances we do need to utilise scaffolding to effectively complete a project however occasionally our teams use “tower” scaffolding or cherry pickers to carry out the work. You can always ask your Surveyor when visiting your home if the job requires the use of scaffolding. If scaffolding is required then we will include the cost for this in the breakdown of costs in your quote.

Scaffolding is often a necessary part of roof work in order to secure the safety of our teams that will be working on your property. It is there for your safety and theirs. If we do bring scaffolding to your property please do keep pets and children away from it at all times.

34. Do I need to apply for planning permission?

When you have a new roof coating you usually do not need to apply for planning permission. However if the building is in a protected conservation area or is a listed building then permission could be necessary. This would be determined at the point of survey long before the job begins.

No not at all. Aqua Clear coatings are completely invisible and do not even leave a sheen like appearance on your walls, unlike our competitors I might add! 36. Is it true that you need to mask up the house before you apply wall coatings?

Yes it is true. Some companies don’t bother, but we make it a priority in the preparation stage. We want to work with you to protect your areas such as windows, doors, driveways, paths and lawns. We use masking tape and paper to protect your areas and never leave a big mess for you to clear up once we have left!

We will try to work in sections masking areas nearby rather than the whole house. Masking tape can reduce light from coming in to the property and so we find this method works well. Our masking tape is specially formulated so as not to ruin your existing paintwork. We are there to protect and improve your property, not damage it and make a big mess for you to clear up!

37. Are coatings self-cleaning?

Although the wall coating is not self-cleaning, it does act as a barrier in that dirt usually washes off instead of being absorbed when it rains. A simple spray with a hose or jet wash will bring the roof up to looking like new. We recommend this to be done once every 5 years and are happy to offer this service to our customers upon request.

38. Do you only apply wall coatings using a spray machine or are there other products too?

We only use the spray machine, specifically the high pressure Graco spray machines or top fed air powered hopper guns. There are indeed companies out there that prefer to use the trowel applied exterior wall coatings but we prefer to stay away from such methods. We don’t believe they work well and here’s why;

1. Pebbledash is aggressively removed often resulting in damaged mortar joints between the bricks.
2. This can result in wall buckling and can invalidate your buildings insurance.
3. It can take a lot longer to do than by use of spray, sometimes double the time.
4. It can cost up to three times more than using the spray method.
5. It is a lot messier.

Trowel applied exterior wall coating companies have their reasons for choosing to do what they do, and we have ours. It’s up to you to do the research and make a decision.

39. Another company did my wall coating a few years ago and now I have a problem with it. I have tried to contact them but they seem to have disappeared. Is my guarantee valid anywhere else?

Unfortunately it is not. This is why we recommend that you choose a wall coatings company that has been around for many years and has a good reputation in the building trade. However you could take your guarantee to a solicitor or to citizen’s advice to see if you can get some compensation. However in our experience, compensation is a rarity.

Do be sure however to thoroughly check all your documentation as the contractor may have provided warranty insurance. However this is near impossible to claim back on. The best suggestion is usually to contact another wall coatings company to come and sort the problem out. However they are likely to charge and it may seem like a high cost for a small problem. At this stage often people choose to redo their wall coating with a reputable company that offers a concrete guarantee.

Our wall coating and brickwork waterproofing products are best applied to a whole property, or at least the whole elevation. We therefore do not take on flats or apartments.

45. Would you repair my roof if another company have done a poor job?

Yes of course we would be happy to correct previous work on your wall. We understand that sometimes you have to kiss a few frogs before you find your Prince, and the same goes in the building trade. Usually however we find that it is necessary to redo an entire wall rather than just one small part as the products we use will differ from the products previously used. We will however give you a new guarantee for the all the work we have done.

46. Do you only offer textured exterior wall coatings?

Not at all. Aqua Protection offer a variety of external wall finishes including a smooth finish, fine texture and coarse finish. We like to offer our customers a bespoke service whereby they can feel secure that whatever look they are hoping for, we will supply. We can create the colour you want with a finish you want, without compromising on the quality of the product.

Our exterior wall coatings are resin based, spray applied and promise a hard wearing long life that will exceed your expectations.

47. Do you offer a pebbledash removal service?

Yes we certainly do. Sometimes people find that perfect house, but there is only one problem, the pebble dash. Don’t be put off from buying that perfect property just because it has pebble dash! Have it removed instead. We at Aqua Protection can carefully remove the pebbledash and then apply one of our high performance renders or exterior textured pebble dashed wall coatings. 48. Do you apply wall coating to garden walls?

We are happy to apply coating to your garden walls if we are already working on the outside of your house. However we do not take on projects that solely involve garden walls. Please note that garden walls are not protected in our warranty due to the fact that they will not have a DPC (damp course) or cavity.

50. Do you take care to protect my rare plants in my garden when you apply the roof coating?

Yes of course we will. We are meticulously careful that we protect areas near the area where the work is taking place. We protect lawns and driveways, bushes and shrubs, borders and trailing plants just to name a few. We will work with you to highlight important features and areas that you want protected so you can feel content in the know-how that they won’t get damaged.

51. How do I remove the mess left on my pipes and windows?

Professionals know how to do a tidy job, and if they do make a mess, they clear it up! If a company leaves the site stating the job is completed having left a mess than our suggestion is to call them and get them to clear it up!

However should you still want to know how to clear wall coating from pipes and windows then here’s what to do...........

Water will not wash off excess wall coating due to its permeability. In order to remove overspray wall coating the best thing to do is to get some muslin or some other unwanted cloth and soak it in white spirit. Then rub it as hard as you can. Once it has mist over you can wipe it with a clean cloth. You can also clean wall coating off windows and glass with white spirit although we recommend you also use a scraper.

Should your driveway be speckled with paint spots then a wire brush with a high pressure hose should do the trick.

AQUA PROTECTION takes special care to protect areas like windows, pipes, and driveways so you don’t have to clear up the mess when we leave. However if you have been unfortunate enough to have come across a messy wall coatings company then we hope this information has proven useful.

52. Will my fish pond be protected from the products used on my wall?

Aqua Protection is passionate about walls, but also works hard to protect the environment and all that live in it. We protect ponds and the fish within the pond with a cover so that the wall coating does not pollute the water.

Without a cover the fish would be cut off from their air supply by a fine oily film on the surface of the water. Wall coatings under no circumstances should contaminate a water supply and Aqua Protection does everything in their power to make sure that this doesn’t happen.

53. A general builder said that textured coatings may not be a good idea for my house? Is that right?

We don’t agree. We are aware that some builders try and dissuade our customers from buying our products and services due to selfish reasons and we feel confident in the knowledge that textured coatings are an excellent quality product that will transform your home!

Independent builders are happy to try and lead you astray away from us as they know that if you get them to do the work they are likely to be needed every 1 to 2 years when the paint starts to peel, flake or crack!

Aqua Protection is devoted to quality, both in service and in the products we use. The beauty of having your wall coatings applied by Aqua Protection is that you won’t need to call us back for about 35 years!

So, in short, no that is not right at all!

54. Are your wall coatings dangerous to domestic pets and if so what about my cats?

Aqua Protection take health and safety issues very seriously. It is important to note that ALL coatings and paints are harmful to animals. It is vital that all animals and children be kept away from any construction related material on your property. Aqua Protection kindly asks you to keep all animals and children as far away from the construction site as possible to avoid a serious accident. So

57. Can you render over an existing wall coating?

We don’t find it works well to add a wall coating to an existing wall coating. We usually have to remove the existing coating before applying another. In order for the new coating to stick to the wall effectively, the old coating usually needs to be removed. A qualified Surveyor will be able to advise you on this matter when surveying your wall.

58. Are there any hidden costs?

Aqua Protection believes in fair trading so the price stated in the quote is the price you pay. Should we discover along the way that further work is needed then we do this free of charge and do not add this to the final bill. The final bill is exactly the same as the quote and includes all materials, labour, scaffolding and VAT.

The Surveyor who comes to visit your property and provides you with a quote is not a salesman. They are not in the business of playing number games and purely say it like it is.

59. Do I need a builder to do the repair work before you come?

No certainly not. You don’t need a builder at all. Aqua Protection will do all the repairs as part of our service.

We do a vast variety of repairs including the following:

1. DPC – Injecting damp proof courses
2. Treating penetrating damp
3. Eliminating algae
4. Removing mould and moss
5. Re-pointing or replacing bricks
6. Removing old loose paint
7. Repairs to Tyrolean, pebbledash, spar dash
8. Rendering
9. Filling in holes
10. Correcting previously carried out repairs
11. Removing unwanted objects of requested

60. I have a specific colour in mind that isn’t on your colour chart. Can you do it?

Yes we can. Our colour charts only include the most popular colours. We can match virtually any colour of paint that you like whether a traditional colour for a historic building or a vibrant colour for a dainty cottage. Just provide us with the can of paint or swatch that you would like to match and we will do our best to come up with a matching colour.

However it is important to note that some larger paint manufacturers’ paints are sometimes protected by trade mark so cannot be matched precisely for legal reasons.

If you don’t have a specific colour in mind then we would be happy to show you our wealth of examples of colour effects and schemes available in the Aqua Protection range.

61. Will this wall coating form part of my HIP (home information pack)?

Yes it will. If you are selling a home after September 2007 and have 3 or more bedrooms then you will need to provide a HIP (Home Information Pack). Once your work has been completed by Aqua Protection then you will be supplied with a formal 25 year guarantee. It is recommended that you include this guarantee in your HIP and use it as a selling point to potential buyers. Any buyer will be happy in the knowledge that they will not need wall maintenance for a minimum of 25 years.

62. Why do you not include prices on your website?

We believe it wouldn’t be fair to you to give you approximate prices when we could be very wrong as we have no idea what state your walls are in! We cannot estimate the amount of repair work needing to be done and we will need to accurately measure the size of the area to be coated. You will also need to choose and decide on which materials will be used before being able to come up with a quote. We understand it may be inconvenient for some people to have a Surveyor visit but it really is the only way to get an accurate price.

63. Do you do small areas of exterior wall?

Generally speaking, no we don’t. Unfortunately we can only take on complete projects that involve more than a small area due to distances travelled to get to a job. It would not be cost effective to pay out for travel and accommodation if the job is only very small as I am sure you can appreciate.
